Preparing to leave on cruise.

Monday 2 May 2016.

We have been in South Africa for about five months. It was last December when we arrived at our house in Untentweni on the Kwa Zulu Natal south coast. The reason we had come out was for Moira to have a hip replacement operation. She had been suffering with severe pain for a while, probably from all our long distance pilgrimages. She made an appointment with Dr Babumba at the Hibiscus Hospital in Port Shepstone, he is recognised as an expert in hip and knee replacement procedures. It was soon after we arrived here and after examinations and x-rays she was booked in for the op early in January, after the holiday period.

The operation was successful and she was in the hospital for about a week recovering. I had to look after myself for the week and then after Moira as well when she got home; I did all the shopping, cooking and cleaning. Initially she moved about with the aid of crutches and that lasted for about a month. She was then moving about unassisted without any problem, Babumba was very happy with her progress and told her she could start doing some light exercising. She joined me at the gym where she did some easy cycling and walking on the treadmill. Soon she was coming with me to the Southport Bowling club first just to sit in the sun and watch but she was soon playing again. The bowlers were surprised at her recovery and how well she was playing.

Once the doctor had signed her off as 'fit' she booked our return to Europe on the MSC Sinfonia 22 day relocation cruise from Cape Town to Venice. It departs on Friday 6 May but we leave tomorrow for Cape Town. We have arranged to stay with Ray and Carol Spencer who used to live in Umtentweni, we used to play bowls with them. They moved to Cape Town a couple of years ago claiming there wasn't anything to do here other than bowling.

One amusing thing I did was to tell our grand- daughter Hollie that her granny had her leg cut off and a wooden one put on in its place. I sent her a photograph.
