Tuesday 31 May.
It was over 300 km still to go to Mont San Michel but having plenty of time I decided to take it over 2 days and only do about 200 km today. Moira selected an aire at Nozay about 50 kms south of Rennes. The aires' book had it listed as having an electric hook up which was good.
As we weren't driving far today there was no rush getting away. I made a cup of tea and we read for an hour before getting up and showering. I made the breakfast and then we prepared to leave. Once the dishes were washed, the electric cable and wheel ramps packed away we filled up with fresh water, emptied the waste water and toilet. When all these chores were done we got on our way.
It was a reasonable minor road to start, D725, for about 30 km towards Bressuire where we picked up a motorway that Tom Tom didn't have in its programme. This motorway ran all the way to Rennes so we had good fast driving for the rest of the way. I wanted to stop for a cup of tea but they hadn't built any service areas into this new road yet; so I continued driving all the way to Nozay without a stop. There had been more rain through the night but it was dry for the drive and the sky was beginning to brighten up.
Before trying to find the aire in Nozay we went to a Super U supermarket for bread and to fill up with diesel. When I put in the fuel the pump cut out at 20 litres, Moira put the debit card in the machine to try again and it just gave another 20 litres. The tank was nearly full so I gave up at that. We think the machine was set to give only 20 litres at a time because of the strikes and fuel shortage. After that Tom Tom took is without any problem to the aire. We had to pay at the entrance before the barrier would lift, it took the debit card for payment; it cost €8.
It was a lovely site beside a nice lake and there was an electric hook up. Once Moira had the cable connected to the power point I got the kettle on for coffee and then we had lunch, once again French bread with Camembert and pate. We relaxed after out lunch reading, I started a book I picked up at the campsite near the storage farm, it was by Jack Higgins 'Edge of Danger', it seems quite good so far.
Later in the afternoon the sun was now coming out of the clouds and it had got warm. We went for a short walk to see the lake. There was a framework round the perimeter with a moving cable that water skiers hooked on to and whizzed round the lake on their boards. We watched them for a while and it was quite interesting but when they fell in they had to swim back to the start to hook up again to the revolving cable. When they ski with a boat and they fall in the boat comes back for them so in that way it is easier.
As we got back to our 'van there was another motorhome parked near us and they were Brits. They had been in Spain since March and were now heading home. They had booked on a ferry from Roscoff to Plymouth and hoping the strike wasn't affecting the crossings from there. Their fridge had broken down and we got some chicken breasts they had left that would have just gone off if they kept them.
After that we were in the motorhome for the night. Moira made spaghetti Bolognese for dinner and there was more strawberries with yoghurt for dessert. After I washed up we read for an hour then I made up the bed. From there we watched another 'Rumpole of the Bailey' on the recorder before getting to sleep.
